6hrs Behind the Wheel Lessons

State mandated 6hrs of behind the wheel instruction with a certified instructor for students under 16 1/2 to obtain their license.

How It Works

Please note, the DMV no longer administers the Drivers Test directly. As a result, we will schedule your test immediately after your final BTW lesson, a process that has led to higher scores on the test.

To get registered and scheduled, we require two things from you:

  1. Registration form (button below)

  2. Signed BTW Contract; (button below) a parent/guardian must sign (with a real signature) and return the below BTW Contract. The signed contract can be returned as a clear photo via email 4csasecretary@gmail.com or text (970-426-8615); a PDF is not required.

Once both the registration form and signed contract are received, we will email you with scheduling.

If the student has completed our in-person (not online) 30-hour classroom Driver’s Ed course with Tim, please let us know the month and year. You have already paid for the lessons and do not need to sign the contract again, but please submit the registration form since the student did not have their permit at that time. Remember, you have one year from permit issuance to complete the BTW’s without $50/hr. additional fees, per the contract signed in that class.

SCHEDULING:

The course consists of three, two-hour lessons, with the driving test scheduled immediately after the final lesson. We recommend spreading the sessions with one lesson now, the second halfway through, and the last (including the test) on or after the eligibility date. Although having more time between lessons is preferable so that students can practice what they've learned at home, lessons cannot be scheduled less than 2 weeks apart.

  • The 1st two Lessons start at 8am, 10am, 1pm, or 3pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday.

  • The final lesson & test are 8–10:30am, 9:30am–12pm, 1–3:30pm, or 2:30–5pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday.

Depending on your flexibility appointments are being scheduled about 2 + months out.

If you cannot make an appointment, you must cancel or reschedule in writing (by email or text to 970-426-8615) at least one full business day before your appointment. Failure to do so will result in a $50 rescheduling fee. Late Arrivals and No-Shows: A $50 rescheduling fee will apply. If the appointment is for a discounted second test, the discount will also be forfeited. Repeated cancellations or missed appointments may result in referral elsewhere for lessons or testing.

LOCATION:

1911 Main Ave., Durango, CO 81301

Please meet the instructor in the north parking lot near the "Student Driver" vehicles (a black Toyota Camry or a teal green Honda CRV). We ask that you do not park in our reserved spots, but please ensure you are at the vehicles by your scheduled appointment time.

PAYMENTS:

Behind the Wheel (BTW) Lessons can be paid by cash, check, or Venmo:

  • $500 cash or check (payable to 4CSA or Four Corners Safety Association) due to instructor at your first lesson.

  • $510 via Venmo (@fcsadgo), paid 48 hours before your first appointment.

  • Driver’s Test: $65 cash, paid directly to the instructor on the day of your test.

How the Lessons Work:

The six hours are divided into three, two-hour sessions. We suggest one session now, another halfway through, and the last session right before the drive test for higher pass rates.

  • You must have your current, valid Colorado learner’s permit with an expiration date.

  • If under 18 years old: You must hold your permit for a full year before taking the driving test.

  • Students may opt out if they are 16 ½ years old or older, or live more than 30 miles from any driving school location. Additionally, you must complete 12 extra hours with a parent/guardian, for a total of 62 driving hours.

  • You must complete at least 10 hours driving with a licensed driver before your first lesson.

  • To drive, you must have your current, valid Colorado learner’s permit with an expiration date at all times.

  • Although having more time between lessons is preferable so that students can practice what they've learned at home, lessons cannot be scheduled less than 2 weeks apart.

How the Driver’s Test Work:

  • 4CSA is certified by the State of Colorado to conduct driver’s tests. Payment is required in exact cash upon arrival.

  • 1st Driver Test: $65

  • 2nd Driver Test within 30 days of 1st test: $65 *Note: you must reschedule with us right away so we can make sure we are able to get back in within the 30 days. After 30 days it reverts to the regular $80.

  • 3rd and subsequent tests: $80 each

  • Reschedule for no-show / showing up late / cancellation: +$50

  • If you are under 18 years old, you must hold your permit for a full year before testing.

  • The test typically takes 20–25 minutes, plus 5–10 minutes for entering your information in DRIVES, the DMV database. Plan on 30 minutes total. No paperwork is given; your results are entered directly into the DMV system, and you pay the required license fee at the DMV.

  • If you pass the test on the first try (with no unusual circumstances), you can convert your permit to a driver’s license online: https://dmv.colorado.gov/anywhere.

  • If you cannot or do not wish to do it online, you must make a DMV appointment by phone or online: https://dmv.colorado.gov/AppointmentScheduling. Note: The DMV does not process licenses after 4:00pm.

  • To drive, you must have your current, valid Colorado learner’s permit with an expiration date at all times.

  • You are paying for the basic operator driving skill test to complete requirements for a license. There are no refunds, and payment does not guarantee a passing grade. Passing is determined by the standards set by the State of Colorado and outlined in the Colorado Driver Handbook.

YOU UNDERSTAND THAT YOU ARE PAYING FOR THE BASIC OPERATOR DRIVING SKILL TEST FOR THE COMPLETION OF REQUIREMENTS TO GET A LICENSE AND THAT THERE ARE NO REFUNDS. THIS DOES NOT ENTITLE YOU TO A PASSING GRADE. TO GET A LICENSE, YOU MUST PASS THE DRIVE TEST AS SET FORTH BY THE STATE OF COLORADO DRIVER TESTING AND EDUCATION DEPARTMENT OF THE DIVISION OF MOTOR VEHICLES OF THE COLORADO DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE AS ADOPTED FROM THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF MOTOR VEHICLE ADMINISTRATORS’ GUIDELINES AND PUT FORTH PLAINLY IN THE COLORADO DRIVER HANDBOOK. We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone who we deem as being argumentative, combative, or completely disrespectful of our evaluation and advice and to any employee of Four Corners Safety Association. You will be asked to leave and find another place to do your testing.
